The hard thing to help people understand is that AI translators will absolutely never be able to match human translators and just knowing the language in general, and it has nothing to do with not understanding the capabilities of technology. First of all, all of us speak incorrectly in our native languages in daily speech, often even when we know that it is incorrect because it sounds oddly formal to speak correctly in some situations. AI is limited to the input we give it, and when that input is wrong, the output cannot be correct. It also cannot interpret tone and occasion because those cannot be conveyed easily. If you change a word or a tone it can change the intended meaning completely. Think about the difference in choosing the word father versus the word daddy. 🤷‍♀️ Also, jokes, puns, and particularly slang will always be problematic. Slang in particular changes rapidly. For teenagers, things change even across one school year. We always joke about how parents cannot understand what their teens are talking about, even when they are all educated native speakers of the same language. That isn’t going to change, and AI cannot keep up. It can be useful in a pinch but it isn’t possible for it to properly replace just doing it right.
